Someone probably saw the wooden anti-discrimination sign at the entrance when they were on their way in for chicken fried steak and got their panties in a bunch. The real irony is that in the 1990s, Cracker Barrel was the industry’s leading model for racial and sexual orientation discrimination.
They instituted a company-wide policy of firing all suspected gay employees, and in many locations had black- and non-black segregated seating sections for customers, with black- and non-black servers assigned to those sections based on their race. They fought federal government objections, insisting that separate-but-equal segregated seating was only reasonable, since many non-black men vehemently objected to the indignity of black staff speaking to white women. In 2004, they eventually reached a settlement where they maintain that they did nothing wrong, but agreed to pay a $9 million fine and shift to integrated seating to appease the government and shareholders. In 2002 they also added sexual orientation to their non-discrimination policy, even though the US government was absolutely fine with that at the time; the Supreme Court didn’t rule that sexual orientation violated Title VII of the Civil Rights Act until 2020. (Today’s court would probably rule differently).
